Well, that and the fact that he tended to buy Sam's favorite shampoo, too.
Not that Sam doesn't still have things from drifting with Dean. It would always be there.
Case in point, he picks up a cheeseburger without thinking as he goes through the cafeteria line. "I know we'll find out everything about each other in a little while, but I suppose we should talk first."
