Name: Sam Winchester
Canon Point:Near the end of 5.22 Swan Song, just about as Sam's jumping into the Cage Canon updated to the end of 7.18 Party On, Garth.
Is this character dead? It's borderline, but no.
History: History (care of Supernatural Wiki)
Personality:
In pretty much every way, Sam is Dean's complete opposite. He's quieter, more sensitive and much more studious. People like to talk to him and tend to trust him on sight. Of course, he's also a very smooth liar, which helps a lot with gaining that trust. He also has the worse temper. Better control of it, maybe, but much worse when he's provoked. Sam is very protective of his brother and if the temper shows, it's generally because Dean's in danger. Given that they are the only blood family either has left, the protectiveness can't be that surprising. He's also about as stubborn as they come, which has often put him at loggerheads with Dean. And their father. And Bobby. Push him and he's likely to push back just as hard. Either that or go off and do what he was warned not to, just to prove he can. He's a very intelligent man, but sometimes he certainly doesn't seem very bright. Especially if riled up.
Right now, though, Sam's driving focus is atonement for his obsession with destroying Lilith (the demon who sent Dean to Hell) and letting Lucifer out of his prison. Sam has something of an addictive personality, leading him to make Bad Decisions (trusting Ruby, drinking demon's blood, beating up Dean). Because of these Bad Decisions, he doesn't trust himself, which has led him to leave Dean and the Hunt behind twice. He's become afraid of himself and what he could do. Coupled with the Winchester Unhealthy Devotion to Family (tm), though, he always comes back when Dean calls. Or Dean's in trouble. Or Dean's in danger.
There's still a part of him hoping that there's something more normal on the other side of all the possible death and destruction, the possible Apocalypse. He knows that this will never happen for himself now, since he's said yes to Lucifer and is heading for the Cage. But he made Dean promise to leave hunting behind and try for it with Lisa Braden. The only reason he was able to say yes and try to stop the Apocalypse was by knowing that somebody would be there for Dean. Even if it wasn't him.
Skills | Powers:
Skills: Sam has a great deal of fighting training and is proficient with firearms, shotguns and various melee weapons. He's also a bit of a research monkey, mostly out of necessity because Dean really doesn't like research. He has a great memory for the things that he reads, though, having become something of an 'encyclopedia of weirdness'. He can read and recall spells in Latin and knows how to deal with a great many supernatural beasties. He knows how to make hex bags to hide from demons and angels alike. He knows how to pick locks, hack computers, con while in a disguise and jack a car. He's also a damned good actor and butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. Dean's better at credit card scams, but they're both good at hustling pool, darts, poker and the like. Sam also has a great sense of direction and timing, once having found his way back to a farm he went to while blindfolded by keeping track of turns and the time between them.
Powers: Sam is, for the most part, baseline (if badass) human. He has two powers that seem to have stuck with him no matter what:
Sixth Sense - Sam has a sixth sense that allows him to sense the supernatural, especially spirits. He was able to sense the various presences in the old Winchester house in Lawrence and was able to sense Dean's spirit when Dean was greatly distressed. The stronger the impression, the more Sam can feel.
Immunity - Sam has immunity to the powers of demons in his world.
Sam also has a couple of powers that were his long before the addiction to demon blood in Season Four that caused an incredible power boost. While he doesn't have access to those powers anymore, it's possible that his earlier powers are simply dormant and may be awoken at a later date if plot or Mod require:
Premonitions/Visions - Sam's premonitions tend to have to do with deaths and danger, especially when connected to demons in his world. They started out as simply coming to him in dreams but they can also happen when he's awake, now. He rarely sees anything more than a day or two in advance of it happening and sometimes only hours ahead. Once, he even saw a death happening blocks away just as it happened. Sam can't control when he gets his visions and they always come with a very painful headaches. They have brought Sam straight out of a sound sleep before.
First Person Sample:
[The video flips on to show Sam near the docks. He mostly looks exhausted, though there's no little curiosity in his face as well.]
I'll admit, I was expecting to see a lot more fire and brimstone and a lot less ancient Greece-meets-the midwest when I woke up. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. This is a much better vacation spot than where I was headed.
I'd just, you know. Kind of like to know what the hell--maybe literally--is going on here?
[There's another thought that seems to pass through his mind and Sam's mouth hardens into a line.]
Dean, you better not be here. I have no idea what's going on, but if any of this is the result of you dealing for me? I'm going to kick your ass.
Third Person Sample:
The Library. Sam didn't know how much of his life, exactly, had been spent in libraries, but they were familiar. Comfortable, when everything else seemed to have gotten turned on its head.
They were in the Underworld. He'd figured that much out for himself, given the method of arrival and the guy on the boat. Not the Underworld he'd been expecting, of course. Frankly, Sam was all for putting off THAT little trip for as long as possible.
It was all still so clear in his memory. Fighting Lucifer tooth and nail, just as he'd told Bobby he would. He failed, though. Couldn't stop Lucifer from killing Castiel. Couldn't stop him from killing Bobby. Couldn't stop him from going after Dean, either. If it hadn't been for the Impala--
"Damn car's saved our lives more times than I can count." Sam ran his fingers along the spines of the books, not really looking for anything. Might have been funny if one of Chuck's books came to hand, but not that funny. The last thing he wanted was a reminder of what he wasn't going to be able to go back to.
Sam finally shook his head, snagging a book at random and tucking it under his arm. Bobby said he'd pretty much set up shop around here somewhere. It was time to go look him up.
