Things had been going well lately. Hunts just seemed to fall into their laps, the book Sam needed at the library had just been handed in or just been reshelved, the sheriff or local law looking the other direction when they needed to get to a cemetery for a salt and burn. It had been going really, really well.

It should have occurred to Sam that things were going a little TOO well, honestly. But he didn't even think about it until a knife that should have had his name on it simply ricocheted off his chest, as though he had some forcefield up around him.

Later that night, Sam pulled his overshirt off at the hotel, looking at the spot where the knife had definitely started to pierce the fabric. "Okay. There's definitely something weird going on here."

Sam had been on the phone at least once a day with Dean, assuring his brother that he was fine and that things were going okay. And to call him if there was a hunt or anything like that. But, really, he's enjoying a little down time and getting to know Gabriel as he is now. Something that they'd never had a chance to do before.

He hummed as he picked up his coffee, snorting softly. "Okay, seriously. That sounds...like it must have been a lot of fun, actually."

Gabriel grinned, leaning comfortably against the counter while he waited for the eggs to finish cooking. It had been a good couple of days simply spending time with Sam and getting to know him.

"Thor was a lot of fun when you caught him in the right mood. Good day? You wound up having a hell of a lot of fun. Bad day? Dodging Mjolnir left and right."

Sam grins in reply, wrapping his hands around the mug and watching Gabriel. It was strange, just how easy some of this has become. Like it's something he should have been doing ages ago. "Sound's a little bit like Dean," he admits, then shakes his head. "We actually found Mjolnir a while back. It was being sold in an auction along with one of the tablets. It's in the bunker right now."

And just like a switch being flipped, the smile fell away. Thor didn't go anywhere without Mjolnir. Ever. When Odin handed the damn thing over, Thor never let it out of his sight.

Which means.. fuck. Dead or retired, and the big guy wasn't exactly one for retirement. "You.. you have it? You're sure it's Mjolnir?"

"Well, the people who were bidding on it certainly seemed to think so?" Sam frowns, looking down at his coffee for a moment. "And it did take out a pagan? Or, at least, pretty sure it was a pagan. Called himself Vili, after Odin's brother." Or maybe he had been Odin's brother. It could get confusing. "I mean, obviously the myths about Thor being the only one who could hold it must have been false."

"Vili was a duplicitous little shit and if he got taken out by Mjolnir then good riddance." Gabriel took a breath, pulling himself together. "Sorry, I.. Thor was like a brother. He wouldn't want to be parted from that hammer for anything."

"Anyone could pick the thing up, but only certain types can pick it up and use the sucker. Magic weapons. You know how those things are - all kinds of cracked out rules."

Sam took a moment to consider that, then looked up at Gabriel. "I know. I'm...sorry. I don't know how it was parted from him, but maybe we can look for him. Maybe return the hammer where it belongs."

Though there was another question that Sam had, now. "Umm. What's it supposed to do when it's used? In actuality, not just myth."

"Maybe," he allowed after a moment. Because Gabriel isn't entirely sure he wants confirmation that Thor is gone. But they're not at the bunker right now, so it's something he can put off for at least the moment.

"It's a weapon of good, to be wielded by the strong willed against darkness. Really most myths aren't far off from the truth, kiddo. Anyone can pick it up, but only someone with a good heart can put it to good use. Someone else picks it up? They've got a really heavy paperweight, nothing more. Mjolnir won't respond to them."

Yeah. Sam was never going to get used to hearing things like that. Because he never thought of himself as having a good heart. Oh, maybe his heart was good, but everything else had been so tarnished by his mistakes...

"I think I used it," he managed after a moment. "I mean, I swung the hammer and suddenly there wasn't any Vili. So I guess that means I must have used it somehow."

The only one who questioned Sam's heart was Sam. Gabriel knew he was a good man, there was no doubt in his mind. He grins, sipping his coffee. "Yep. Then you used it. Which means if you need it again, you can. Mjolnir likes you kiddo. No small feat there."

There were plenty of people who had questioned Sam's heart. It was part of the reason he still questioned it himself. It was just that nobody who mattered to him ever questioned it any more.

"Well, it's a bit heavy for using most of the time. But if the bunker were attacked, I might grab it." Which was always a possibility. After all, they had a Knight of Hell on their bad side.

"A bit heavy? With those arms?" Gabriel can't help but tease. Sure, Thor had arms like tree trunks, but any chance to rib Sam about his size he wasn't going to pass up.

"It's got pretty strong protection magic on it. Not saying you'll be able to call down storms like the big guy did, but if you pick it up, you should be able to paste damn near anything that got in your way."

Sam snorts, rolling his eyes. "Well, there hasn't been a lot coming around that I'd want to paste, really."

A bit of a lie. He is, after all, already thinking about what could be done about Abbadon. If something could be done.

Actually, he kinda really wishes they still had the Colt.

Gabriel grins in reply. "That's supposed to be a good thing, Sammy. Less coming around that you want to paste means less things after you and Grumpy."

And, well. The protection magic helped too.

"Not really less things wanting that. We're just harder to find these days." The protection sigils that Castiel had put on their ribs. The protection magic that Gabriel had given him now. Plus the fact that the Men of Letters' bunker was about as secure as possible. "I mean, there's still the usual who want our heads."

"Well," Gabriel grins easily. "It's good to know at least some things haven't changed. I mean if it got too easy you guys wouldn't stay interested."

He set aside his mug to lean in and kiss him. "But enough shop talk for today. What should we do now that we've gotten the work out of the way?"

Okay, he had his own ideas about what to do, but he wanted to hear what Sam had in mind.

Sam fiddled with his coffee for a moment, thinking. Finally, he set the cup down and pushed his chair back. "I'm not sure," he said after a moment. "Is there something you want to do?"

Oh, Sam had some ideas. He just wasn't certain he was brave enough to say it. He'd had bad luck with relationships before.

They'd been dancing around this for days now. Gabriel took the opportunity to simply straddle Sam's lap and settle in, arms draped lazily around his shoulders. His smile turned wicked as he leaned to kiss him. "You know, I'm sure we can think of a few things that might keep us inside for the better part of the day."

Somebody had to make that first move and Sam was just nervous enough that he couldn't. So it was a relief when Gabriel walked over and plonked himself in Sam's lap, Sam's arms going around his waist automatically as he turned his head up for the kiss.

"Mmm. Suppose so," he agreed, looking up at Gabriel, then he leaned in to press a kiss to the side of his neck. "I think I might be ready to go a bit further."

"Just a bit further?" Teasingly indignant, Gabriel pulls back to sift his fingers through Sam's hair. "If you don't drag me upstairs, or even to the couch for some completely earth-shaking sex right this instant Sam Winchester, I might take it personally."

Or continue to take the initiative to give Sam all the right reasons to do just that.. he was flexible.

Sam hesitated a moment before shaking his head. "You realize I don't exactly have a lot of experience with this, right?"

Not that he hadn't done it with a guy before. It had just been a fairly long time ago.

Gabriel cards his fingers slowly through Sam's hair. "If it helps, it's the first time I've had sex as a human? We don't have to get right to it if you don't want to, kiddo." It's enough that Sam is interested - they can take it slower if they need to.

The hesitation becomes a smile and Sam laughs softly. "I think...slower might be good. The first time, at least. It's not like I've seen you naked before and I'd like to take my time."

Besides, there were a lot of levels of 'sex'. Sam didn't mind that.

Take his time. Oh Gabriel liked the sound of that and he settled in for another kiss. "Well, we do have the rest of the day to ourselves. I think that's a good start, don't you?"

His hands dipped a little lower to just ghost beneath the hem of Sam's tshirt, barely touching warm, bare skin.

Sam shuddered, head tilting back slightly as he groaned. "I think that's a very good start," he agreed, his hands moving to mirror Gabriel's, though his larger hands meant there wasn't so much ghosting as actually sliding beneath Gabriel's hem, thumbs brushing against his skin properly.
